Cheaper fruit and veges push down food price in March

Food prices fell by 1.3% in March mainly due to cheaper fruit and vegetables.

Statistics New Zealand grocery and meat prices were also down.

Tomatoes were the cheapest they've been in four years at $2.76 a kilogram, apple prices were down by a third and the cost of kumara fell 19%.

In the year to March, food prices fell by 0.4% led by lower prices for dairy products.

Food prices make up nearly 19% of the Consumers Price Index.
