Canterbury Regional Council says a fire in Christchurch could mean residents and businesses will have to put up with unpleasant odours in the area for weeks.
The fire at the Owaka Holdings site in Wigram started last week and is still going.
The council said the cause of the blaze in 3000 cubic metres of kitchen cabinets, is spontaneous combustion.
The fire is being constantly monitored.
The Fire Service said it could be several weeks before the fire burns itself out.
