More support wanted for organ donors in NZ

A campaigner for organ donation reform wants New Zealand to follow Australia's lead in offering greater financial support for live organ donors.

The Australian government on Sunday announced a pilot scheme where living organ donors will receive six weeks on the minimum wage at $A606 per week while they recover from transplant surgery.

Give Life New Zealand founder Andy Tookey said people cannot afford to be live organ donors if they have to take time off work.

Mr Tookey said more people in New Zealand would donate if they received better financial support.
