Inexperienced hunters warned not to go it alone

Taupo police are warning inexperienced hunters not to go hunting alone after a man who got lost had to be rescued.

The 22-year-old was in the Kaimanawa Forest Park in the central North Island and left his two hunting friends on Friday.

Sergeant Mark Bond says the man called his mother by cellphone to say that he was lost.

The man was then located by police who sent a rescue helicopter to winch him to safety.

Mr Bond says hunting alone is not advised, especially if people are not familiar with the bush they are in.

Having GPS rather than just a cellphone is a more reliable option to carry in the event of becoming lost, he says.
