The enrolment schemes of some of Auckland's most popular schools are being reviewed as official figures show some take more than half of their students from out-of-zone areas.
The Ministry of Education's list of schools for annual review includes Auckland Grammar and Westlake Boys and Girls High Schools.
Figures obtained under the Official Information Act show that two schools - Auckland Girls Grammar and Westlake Girls - take more than 60% of students from out-of-zone suburbs.
One sign of whether schools need enrolment schemes is whether they hold ballots for out-of-zone applications, but the ministry says it does not have that information.
It says the review will determine which schemes should be dropped.
The ministry's regional head, Bruce Adin, says the review will look at why at least two schools are taking more than 60% of students from out-of-zone areas.
Mr Adin says that on average 20% of students in schools with enrolment schemes are from out-of-zone areas.
Education Minister Anne Tolley says she is not opposed to some families having hereditary rights to attend a school.
Ms Tolley is to meet Auckland principals in the next few days to discuss the city's school zoning.
