Pupu Springs gets its proper name back

9:49 pm on 6 April 2009

A Golden Bay iwi is pleased that the internationally recognised landmark of Pupu Springs is reverting to its proper Maori name.

The chairperson of Ngati Tama Mana Whenua ki te Tau Ihu Trust, Fred Te Miha, says it only expects that people will use the traditional name, Waikoropupu, instead of Pupu Springs.

He says the shortened term had sprouted from people's laziness.

DoC says that under its plan, designed to protect the freshwater springs by restricting commercial activities around them, the name will be officially changed to Te Waikoropupu Springs.

Concessions for commercial recreation will be limited to guided walking tours of no more than 20 people.

Individuals will still be able to visit the springs.
