Housing Minister Nick Smith says a newly-released report should help the Government and the Auckland Council reach an agreement on how to boost the supply of homes in the city.
Dr Smith says the report provides figures showing a sharp increase in house construction will be needed to meet demand in Auckland
He says both sides are in agreement that both greenfield (new development) and brownfield (re-development) is needed to overcome the shortage.
But Dr Smith says he is still concerned the council is being too optimistic about the rate apartment blocks will be built in future.
Dr Smith says more land must be made available to boost housing, and the annual construction of higher density housing needs to rise five-fold.
Figures in the report largely match those from Auckland Council.
But in a media statement Dr Smith has mistakenly referred to there being enough land for 14,500 sections, rather than dwellings.
The Government and Auckland Council agree on the scale of the problem, but are loggerheads over how best to solve it.
The council says new housing land can be added 18 months sooner, if the Government removes the requirement for the city's new planning rulebook to be subject to a lengthy appeal period.
