The High Court has imposed restrictions on an Auckland doctor convicted of possessing child pornography.

Vikram Abraham Joseph, 25, pleaded guilty last July to six charges of possessing objectionable material.

The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal ruled in December that his registration be suspended for 12 months, after hearing he had six videos involving the sexual exploitation of children.

The High Court has granted a stay of the suspension while Joseph appeals the penalty, but it has imposed restrictions on his ability to practise, including that he must not examine or assess anyone under the age of 16.

During the tribunal hearing, it emerged that Joseph was working at the Auckland Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department when he was sentenced by the courts to 300 hours community service and 12 months supervision on the pornography charges.
