Snapshot of career prospects released

The chances of getting a job as a firefighter, real estate agent, actor or journalist are limited, according to a snapshot of career prospects released on Tuesday.

The Occupational Outlook Report compiled by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is designed for young people considering career options.

It assesses 40 common occupations for cost of training, likely income and employment prospects.

For example, it says engineers have high course fees but also get high incomes and have good job prospects, while actors have low fees, low incomes and limited job prospects.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says there has been a shortage of information on the outlook for different jobs, and the new report will help young people making career choices.
