The father and son whose boat went missing in the Far North on Sunday have been found safe and well by the Coastguard.
Michael Ward, who is 72, and his son John Ward, 23, left Mill Bay in Mangonui north of Kaitaia in a small aluminium boat on Sunday afternoon and a search was launched when they failed to return home that night.
The search on Monday included two Coastguard vessels and a plane.
Coastguard Whangaroa Rescue says the pair were found in their boat at 1.30pm on Monday drifting one nautical miles off Okaituna Bay.
It appears their outboard motor had broken down.
Coastguard Northern Region says the men had no flares, lights or means of communication. It says it is important for boaties to carry two forms of waterproof communication.
