A man has been arrested and charged with killing a woman whose body was found in an Invercargill hostel on Saturday.

Police say the 30-year-old man will face a murder charge in the Invercargill District Court on Monday.

A post mortem examination will be carried out on the 38-year-old woman.

Inspector Olaf Jensen says the scene examination, which includes the nearby Otepuni Gardens, will continue for a couple of days.

He says some items which may be relevant to the inquiry have been recovered from the gardens and police would like to speak to anyone who was in the Otepuni Gardens between 4am and 5am on Saturday.

Inspector Jensen says the man knew the victim.

More than 20 police officers are working on the investigation.
