Scientists have made new discoveries in one of the world's deepest trenches.
NIWA scientists have returned from a two-week survey of the Kermadec Trench, between the North Island and Tonga, where they collected photographs and video footage of new-to-science fish.
They spent seven days taking samples and fish and shot 6500 photos.
A NIWA principal scientist, Dr Malcolm Clark, says deep sea research is no longer as inaccessible as it once was and technological advances make research easier.
The finds include a new species of eelpout as well as a species of rat tail not previously found in south-west Pacific.
The new specimens will be held at Te Papa.
