One of the world's oldest and rarest trees was planted in Christchurch on Wednesday to mark the 150th anniversary of the city's Botanic Gardens.
The Wollemi Pine was thought to be extinct for millions of years until it wasrediscovered in 1994 in New South Wales.
Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says the pine will be the first of its kind to be planted in New Zealand and it is a real coup to aquire such a rare specimen.
Mr Parker says the Botanic Gardens also opened the new Gondwana Garden, which holds some of the oldest plants in the southern hemisphere.
