In a written statement on Wednesday, his family say Sir Paul is in Hawke's Bay Hospital in a stable condition.
They have gathered to be close to him and have requested privacy.
Sir Paul was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year's Honours.
He was knighted by Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae at his home at Poukawa near Hastings on 16 January due to the 62-year-old's ill-health.
Sir Paul said at the time that his health is failing due to a reoccurrence of prostate cancer and a heart ailment.
