Mild autumn weather expected

Most of New Zealand can expect average rainfall and temperature over the next few months, say climate scientists.

The seasonal update for March to May from NIWA's National Climate Centre says average temperatures are expected in the South Island, though the North Island may be warmer than average.

The centre's principal scientist, James Renwick, says some areas suffering dry spells in the past few months can expect some relief.

There should be average or above average autumn rainfall in eastern areas of the North Island.

However, Dr Renwick says the west and south of the South Island may be drier than usual.
