A man has been flown to Masterton Hospital from the Wairarapa coast with a wound thought to be from a stingray.

Life Flight Trust said the Wellington man, in his 50s, had a large wound on his leg.

He believes he was cut by a stingray when he was retrieving a cray pot from the sea at Riversdale Beach.

Local surf life saving members treated the man before the rescue helicopter arrived with a paramedic on board.

After further treatment by the paramedic, the trust said, he was transported to Masterton Hospital where he was being assessed.
