A man accused of assaulting an Upper Hutt primary school principal over fears a paedophile had links with the school has appeared in court.

Daniel Wilson, 39, is a relative of a pupil at St Joseph's School. He appeared in the Lower Hutt District Court on Wednesday charged with injuring with intent to injure.

On Friday, St Joseph's Catholic parish admitted that a paedophile who is a member of the parish took part in a prayer group attended by children from the school.

The church says it didn't tell the school about the man's past because there was no protocol in place requiring it to do so.

Mr Wilson has been remanded on bail until 23 January.
