The Connecticut shooting has reignited debate about easy accessibility to guns in the United States and an anti-gun lobbyist says laws in New Zealand could also be better.
The Sporting Goods Association says New Zealanders can be confident because the laws focus on the weapon's owner, and only fit and proper people can own firearms.
But lobbyist Kevin Clements says there is no accurate count of the number of guns.
Mr Clements, who is the professor of peace and conflict studies at Otago University, said both individuals and the number of weapons they have should be registered.
A 1996 report estimated there were more than a million firearms in New Zealand and a 2007 survey ranked the country 22nd in the world in the number of guns per person.
