New safety code for forestry industry

10:42 pm on 5 December 2012

A new safety code has been unveiled for the forestry industry.

The code is intended to help reduce the number of accidents in forestry, which produces six times the number of injury claims to ACC as happens across all economic sectors.

The scheme was unveiled at a conference of Forest Industry Contractors in Rotorua.

It is intended to support a forestry harm reduction campaign launched by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Introduction of the scheme comes after a series of accidents in the sector, most recently in Tararua last week, which led to union calls for a widespread inquiry into safety in forestry.
