Three people were tied up and one was assaulted during an aggravated robbery in Levin, police say.

One of the people at the Joblins Road property awoke about 5.45am on Tuesday when he heard noises outside the house.

Police say he discovered five people in balaclavas trying to break into the property.

The three occupants, one woman and two men, were tied up while the offenders searched the house.

One of the men was assaulted and suffered facial injuries though he did not require hospitalisation.

Detective Sergeant Peter Vine of Levin police says the offenders took cash, two rifles, a shotgun, ammunition, personal effects and one of the victim's vehicles.

The vehicle is a 2009 Black Holden Colorado, registration EZP335.
