Council lodges further action over Saddle Hill

The Dunedin City Council has lodged further court action to try to protect the Saddle Hill ridgeline overlooking the Taieri Plains and parts of Dunedin.

City councillor Colin Weatherall says the silhouette of Jaffray Hill, which forms part of the ridge, is starting to look lumpy because of quarrying work.

Last week, the council applied to the Environment Court for an interim enforcement order to ensure that the hill's shape is kept intact.

But the council is now also asking the court to make an urgent decision on what quarrying can be lawfully carried out.

A hearing on separate action lodged in 2011 to determine legal rights of the quarry's owner, Saddle Views Estate Ltd, is not due to be held until April 2013.
