New storm monitoring system for Auckland region

Auckland Council and the MetService have created a new storm monitoring system for the city to improve emergency services responses.

The system makes detailed maps in real time and provides full visibility of rainfall intensity across the Auckland region.

This means that at times of flooding, Civil Defence can send resources and staff to where the map shows rainfall is high rather than waiting for reports from people in the affected area.

Council spokesperson Clive Manley says the system will make emergency service response much faster. He hopes the system can be expanded to other regions.
