Government to introduce new restraining order

6:56 pm on 8 November 2012

The Government is going ahead with a new type of restraining order to protect victims of violent or sexual crimes from their attackers.

The move comes after convicted rapist Craig James Crofts was able to move into an Invercargill house in 2011 next door to a woman he had admitted raping.

Justice Minister Judith Collins says such a situation is unacceptable.

She is creating a new order within the Harassment Act to restrict offenders from visiting certain areas and from contacting victims.

Ms Collins says victims would have to go to a district court to set in place the order, which could remain indefinitely.
