Jewish headstones defaced at Auckland cemetery

6:15 pm on 19 October 2012

The New Zealand Jewish Council says an attack on headstones in a cemetery in central Auckland was deliberately anti-semitic and directed at the city's Jewish community.

20 headstones in a cemetery on Symonds Street have been spray painted with anti-semitic slogans and swastikas.

The Auckland council says graffiti on four headstones will be removed immediately while 16 others will be assessed by a conservation specialist.

New Zealand Jewish Council's president, Stephen Goodman, visited the cemetery on Friday and says he was disgusted.

He says an attack against any group in New Zealand is totally offensive and unacceptable.

Stephen Goodman says he also felt personally attacked because he is Jewish.

The police are investigating.
