Prison officer injured in assault

2:47 pm on 25 September 2012

A Corrections officer has been assaulted by an inmate at Hawke's Bay prison.

Acting prison manager Yvonne Fuller says the officer suffered bruising and swelling to the head and face in the attack on Monday morning and has since been discharged from hospital.

She says she cannot release any details about the prisoner, who was on remand, as he is due to appear before the courts on another matter and identifying him could prejudice that case.

Ms Fuller says police are investigating the attack.

This is the second assault on a prison guard at Hawke's Bay Regional Prison that Corrections has confirmed this year.

A guard suffered a fractured cheekbone when he was attacked by an inmate while carrying out a strip search in July.
