Gulf Harbour ferry back in port after engine failure

3:24 pm on 25 September 2012

An Auckland ferry company says its Gulf Harbour ferry was escorted to port after a mechanical failure.

Police were called just after 6pm on Monday when the engine overheated and broke down on the 360 Discovery Cruises Gulf Harbour service in the Rangitoto Channel.

They say the ferry was escorted to Gulf Harbour Marina in the Whangaparaoa Peninsula by a police boat and a naval vessel.

None of the 57 passengers and three crew members were injured.

A 360 Discovery Cruises spokesperson, Lucy Farrington, says there was no fire on the ferry, as earlier reported.

She says an investigation into the mechanical failure is underway.

Ms Farrington says buses will replace all ferry services to and from Gulf Harbour on Tuesday.

Maritime New Zealand is also looking into the incident.
