A 25-year-old man police say pointed a loaded crossbow at an officer has appeared in Dunedin District Court.
Officers were called to a North East Valley address on Friday night when a woman told them she was being burgled by a son she didn't want inside the home.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken says once officers arrived, the man barricaded himself inside what was his old room.
He said an officer who tried to talk to the man had a loaded crossbow pointed at her through a broken window.
Mr Aitken says the Armed Offenders Squad was called and cordoned off the area and the man eventually surrendered.
He was charged with assault with a weapon and possession of an offensive weapon and was remanded in custody to reappear on Monday.
