The Otago Rugby Union says it is going back to basics for its national provincial championship team.
On Saturday the side plays in its first ITM cup match since it was saved from liquidation in March with a multi-million dollar rescue package.
New general manager Richard Kinley says the union has to break even, so the Razorbacks team is focusing on the bare basics of rugby, staying in hostels instead of hotels, and being kitted out much less than in the past.
Mr Kinley says no players have been drafted from other regions, giving players from the province's rugby clubs a chance to shine.
Harbour Rugby Football Club president Jack Medder says the changes could be for the best.
But he says there will be a lot of finger-pointing if the union does not compete strongly using only homegrown players.
