The record medal haul for New Zealand's Olympic rowers has aroused a surge of interest from people keen to take up the sport or get back into the water.

The rowers won three gold and two bronze medals at the London Games.

The Wellington Rowing Club says enquiries have risen from about two a month to 15 in the past week.

Club vice-captain Tim Wilson says the enquiries have come from novice rowers as well as former members who want to get back into the sport.

Mr Wilson says the club is nearly at capacity with 240 members.
