A friend of a woman killed by a bus in Wellington says permanent barriers are needed along sections of road in the central business district to keep pedestrians safe.
Instead of safety barriers, the Wellington City Council has decided to install street furniture such as benches and bike racks along the edges of footpaths.
After the council removed a pedestrian mall and rerouted traffic last year, Venessa Green died when she was hit by a bus.
Several other people have been injured in subsequent accidents.
Mountain running champion Melissa Moon, who was a friend of Ms Green, says that temporary barriers now in place must be made permanent.
"I know that they're not very attractive, but if they can save lives ... I think you're just going to have put something up a bit more permanent," she says.
But the council says permanent barriers would block pedestrian access to bus stops.
