Police in Christchurch are carrying out checks on people entering the city's red zone.
Four cordons have been set up and police have been stopping cars, cyclists and pedestrians on Friday morning.
A spokesperson says they are checking vehicles and drivers for a range of issues including vehicle compliance and roadworthiness, driver's licences, alcohol and drugs.
General checks on individuals coming into the red zone are also being made.
The spokesperson says more information about the operation will be released later on Friday, but describes it as wide-ranging and involving staff from the traffic unit, the commercial vehicle inspection unit and general patrol staff.
