Wellington to host AFL game

Wellington City Council is planning to host an Australian Football League game on Anzac Day next year.

The proposal is for Melbourne Club St Kilda to play a home game at Westpac Stadium.

Wellington city councillor John Morrison is driving the plan, which he says would be the first time in 140 years a major AFL game has been played outside of Australia.

He is involved in ongoing discussions with the St Kilda club whose representatives have visited Wellington.

Mr Morrison estimates that if the game attracted about 8000 Australian visitors, then for every $1 invested in the event, over $20 would be returned.

He expects a signed contract with the St Kilda club within a month.
