Preliminary findings on mine fire due soon

An investigation into what caused a truck fire at an underground gold mine in Waihi is almost complete and preliminary findings are due to be released within days.

Smoke from the truck which caught fire 100 metres into the Trio mine on Tuesday forced 28 miners into refuge centres before they could return to the surface.

Newmont Waihi Gold spokesperson Kit Wilson said on Saturday inspectors had reached the truck and examined it, but there is no rush to remove it and it may stay there for sometime.

The mine is now back in production and Mr Wilson says the cost of the incident has been insignificant.

Mr Wilson says investigations had almost been completed by Friday.
