One dead in Christchurch house fire

9:06 pm on 20 July 2012

Police in Christchurch believe a house fire that killed an elderly woman on Thursday is not suspicious.

Emergency services called to a block of flats at Clent Lane in the suburb of Spreydon just before 10.30pm found one unit well ablaze.

St John Ambulance says one person was dead at the scene.

Several other people were given medical assessments, but no one was taken to hospital.

The Fire Service says several people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Keane says it is too early to say what caused the fire.

Mr Keane says the woman's name will not be released until she is formally identified.

A post mortem will be carried out on Monday.
