Pair arrested after fire inlet valve thefts

6:15 am on 14 July 2012

Two men have been arrested in relation to the theft of fire inlet valves from buildings around the country.

Police allege the men posed as servicemen and stole a significant number of valves from buildings in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Christchurch.

The valves are used by the fire service to pump water through buildings to fight fires. They are usually made of brass and police suspect they have been sold to scrap metal dealers.

Police say a missing valve could put building occupants and firefighters seriously at risk in the event of a blaze and are asking building owners to check their properties.

The two men have been remanded in custody to appear in court next month. Police are looking for a third person in relation to the thefts.
