Environmental group objects to exploration consent

An environmental lobby group says it is looking at whether it can take the Gisborne District Council to court over a decision to let two oil and gas companies prepare for exploration work.

The council on Tuesday approved without public consultation a consent for TAG Oil and Apache Corporation to construct a drilling platform on a property north-east of Te Karaka.

Environmental Defence Society chairman Gary Taylor says the public should have been informed. His group is looking at whether the consent process is legal.

Gisborne District Council says it decided against informing the public because it believes the activity from the consent it granted has little affect on the community.
