A forestry worker has been airlifted to Whakatane hospital after falling 120 metres down a steep hillside in eastern Bay of Plenty.

A spokesperson for the Tauranga Rescue Helicopter, Art Kowalski, says the rescue on Monday was relatively straightforward, although the winch rope was almost at its limit.

Mr Kowalski says the man has a broken leg, broken clavicle and several cuts and scrapes.
