Otago University to exert more influence on bars

The University of Otago says it intends to exert more influence on where liquor outlets are located in Dunedin.

Over the past year the South Island university has been cracking down on alcohol problems involving students, including suspending them for anti-social behaviour linked to excessive drinking.

It recently supported a street liquor ban proposed by the city council for the North Dunedin student area.

The chairperson of the university's alcohol implementation group, Jennie Connor, says the Government's planned Alcohol Reform Bill would give Otago more of a say about where pubs and other outlets that sell alcohol are located.

Professor Connor says this will give Otago more of a say about where pubs and other outlets which sell alcohol are located.

The university is also looking at ways to reduce hazardous drinking in the city's student flats, she says.
