NZ - Australia trial criminal history checks begin

8:25 am on 3 July 2012

A new pilot scheme has begun that will allow four New Zealand agencies to carry out further criminal record checks on Australians applying for jobs in this country.

The Queensland government will also be able to make similar checks on New Zealand job applicants.

In New Zealand, the Ministry of Social Development, Child Youth & Family, the Teacher's Council and IHC New Zealand will be given access to the criminal records of Australian job applicants.

This information is in addition to the employee checks that are already made through the police.

The Ministry of Justice says throughout the course of the six month trial, criminal records will be released only once the person concerned has given their consent.
