About 600 people have attended a service in Wellington to farewell the New Zealand triplets killed in a shopping mall fire in Qatar.

Thirteen children, including Wellington-born triplets Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes, aged 2, died when a fire engulfed the Gympanzee daycare centre on the first floor of the Villagio Mall in Doha on 28 May. Six adults were also killed.

At the service at Wellington's Cathedral of St Paul on Friday, parents Jane and Martin Weekes remembered the children as happy, adventure seekers who loved the water.

"In the time we had together as a family not a moment was lost. In just over two years we travelled with the babies, to Qatar, Bali, Dubai, Thailand, Greece and earlier this year back to New Zealand via Hong Kong and Disneyland.

"Exploring the world as a family (were) the happiest days of our life," Mr Weekes said.

Following the service, pink, purple and blue balloons - the children's favourite colours - were released into the sky.

A private burial was also held on Friday afternoon.
