Two women have been rescued after spending the night in a remote hut in Lewis Pass.

The Rescue Coordination Centre says the pair became trapped by snow in the Ada Valley.

Search and Rescue coordinator John Dickson says the women activated a locator beacon early on Thursday morning.

A helicopter was sent from Nelson to the Department of Conservation hut.

The women, from Nelson, were found safe and well at about 10.30am.
