Ngati Raukawa Treaty claim settled

5:18 pm on 2 June 2012

The Government on Saturday signed a $50 million Deed of Settlement for all outstanding historical Treaty claims with Ngati Raukawa.

The signing by Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Chris Finlayson took place at Aotearoa Marae near Te Awamutu.

The Deed of Settlement includes commercial redress totalling $50 million, including the value of the 2008 Central North Island Forestry Settlement.

It returns culturally significant sites along the Waikato river and other areas as well as strengthening the commercial relationship between Raukawa and Mighty River Power.

Chris Finlayson says the settlement is a milestone achievement.

He says it had almost 95% support by the Raukawa community and will now be implemented through legislation.
