Iti appeals jail sentence and firearms convictions

9:39 pm on 28 May 2012

Tuhoe activist Tame Iti on Monday lodged an appeal against his convictions and jail sentence on weapons offences.

Iti and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara have been jailed for two years and six months after being found guilty of possessing firearms and a Molotov cocktail at military-style training camps in Te Urewera National Park in 2007.

Iti's lawyer Russell Fairbrother has filed papers in the Court of Appeal in Wellington to dispute the conviction and sentence. He says he can not give any details of the grounds for the appeal.

No date has been set for the hearing, but Mr Fairbrother says he will seek bail pending it.

The lawyer for Kemara has said he will lodge an appeal.
