Future of state house complex uncertain

The last residents of a large state housing complex in Wellington are expected to leave on Monday, but there are questions about the future of the complex.

The Gordon Wilson flats on The Terrace are being cleared after an inspection found there is a risk of concrete falling off its facade.

Questions are now being raised about what Housing New Zealand will do with the site.

Wellington City Councillor Stephanie Cook says there are rumours the site, a prime location, will be sold.

But she says a heritage status on the 1950s building could restrict any demolition, and the building needs to be fixed because of a supply squeeze in Wellington.

Housing New Zealand says the building is structurally sound but it won't comment on its future at this stage.
