A chiropractor has been told to apologise to a patient who suffered a stroke following treatment.
A report by the deputy Health and Disability Commissioner, Rae Lamb, says the 33-year old woman began seeing the chiropractor in November 2007 to ease headaches.
On her fourth treatment, she suffered a stroke after her back and neck were manipulated.
The report says the patient felt bullied into the treatment, but the chiropractor thought he had provided her with the appropriate standard of care.
The deputy commissioner has recommended the chiropractor give an apology, ensure his consultations are clearly documented and develop a policy to monitor patients after back and neck manipulations.
