Shallow 4.4 quake felt in South Island

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake has been felt in the central South Island.

Geonet reports the quake occurred at 12.53am on Wednesday and was centred 10 kilometres west of Hanmer Springs.

The earthquake was relatively shallow, at a depth of 12 kilometres.
