Neurosurgery fundraisers stunned by public support

Public donations to fund New Zealand's first chair in neurosurgery have stunned campaign organisers, with two thirds of the $3 million target raised in 10 weeks.

They say donations have poured in, with some local trusts and businesses donating from $10,000 to $75,000.

The Neurological Foundation campaign committee says a new chair will lead the Dunedin neurosurgery unit, conducting research into diseases and disorders of the brain and nervous system.

The new chair will also join a team of neurosurgeons at Dunedin Hospital and teach a new generation of surgeons.
