The Government says it has signed a contract with a consortium of firms to build the country's first public private partnership schools in West Auckland.

Associate minister of education Craig Foss says Learning Infrastructure Partners will be responsible for the building and maintenance of the two schools for the next 25 years.

Construction company Hawkins will lead the project.

Mr Foss says the consortium has significant experience in designing, building and maintaining New Zealand schools.

Hobsonville Point Primary School will open at the beginning of 2013, with a similarly named secondary school due to open a year later.
