Police have named the hunter fatally shot in a Wairarapa forest on Saturday.

He was Alexander Cameron (Cam) McDonald, believed to have been in his late 20s, from Auckland.

Mr McDonald died in Aorangi Forest Park, near the township of Pirinoa, on Saturday. Police were alerted by his hunting companion about 2pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Sean Hansen said on Sunday that police had interviewed four people from another hunting party who were in the area at the time.

He said officers believed it was a member of that group who fired the fatal shot.

No charges have so far been laid.

A post mortem was being carried out in Palmerston North on Monday.

Mr Hansen said it was important to complete a thorough investigation to get a full picture about what has taken place.

He said police still wanted to hear from any other hunters who were in the area at the time.
