Less salt wanted in food products

Health organisations want food manufacturers in New Zealand to lower the amount of salt in their products.

The Stroke Foundation says many basic foods, such as bread, cereals and processed meats, contain higher levels of salt than the United Kingdom and Australia.

The Heart Foundation says the food industry needs to take action to reduce the risks of high blood pressure posed by pre-packaged products.

The foundation says it is working with some food companies to lower salt levels.

The Food & Grocery Council says that should be done gradually, so consumers' tastebuds can adjust.
